UTP 9th Convocation Ceremony

Convo + No Job = SUCK

I’m finally done with what I hope is the last ever I visit UTP for, (postgraduate study is another story). Im so drained. For the past 1 month or so, I tried focusing and kept myself awake. Wasnt an easy journey. So much distractions and uneasiness, but it all came down to 16th August 2009. I gave it my best. Squeezed out what ever good behaviors that I could from what I had inside my over-tortured and saturated brain. Convocation! is fun, but convocation after graduated for 7 months, and still do not have a job… SUCK!

I should be feeling relief+happy+excited but strangely enough, I don’t feel anything. In fact im feeling so alone right now. So empty. So lost. Its like I’ve suddenly lost my sense of direction. Its making me feel so inadequate. Its like what am I suppose to do now? I feel like I just got dumped or something. Haha. But seriously, it just feels so weird right now. Like previously I have my studies to concentrate on, so now what? I mean, technically Im still not done with study yet. Study is life long journey. I’m still have to pursue postgrad somewhere near future. Arghh… I just cant put it down it words to describe exactly how im feeling and what Im going through. (Besides the fact that I feel like im coming down with a flu or something). This feeling maybe same with the feeling some of my friends who gets a decent CGPA, graduated, convo-cated and still do not have any job. But well, literally others have no job, but they still have something to do, but me… I’M TOTALLY JOBLESS and GOT NOTHING TO DO. damn!

Anyways, right after my convocation ceremony, amiza and my parents headed down to IRC (Information Resource Center) for a session of self-photography (cam-whoring lol!). We let ourselves loose. And by all means we did pose with our hearts out. We cam-whoring like no one is watching , errr… not really, someone is covering up and shy-shy cat in front of my family. Surprisingly, for someone who loves cam-whoring. I mean LOVE!. It does feel pretty good.

Because of jobless, during my convocation, I feel so disconnected from people around me. Ive lost any forms of motivation and any self belief that I had left. I thought I would get over it, this failure and the disappointment in myself. I thought I would pull it thru and carry on. I thought I was strong. But clearly im wrong. The fear, the nightmares, the disappointment is still here. Im still feeling defeated. I used to be stronger. I used to be happier. I used to be more involved and in tune. But now, I dont even know myself anymore. Who am i? Who or what have I become? I feel like a stranger even when im with my own groups of friends. Sometimes, I have to put up an act, force a smile just to get by without getting caught.

I feel like im losing grip of everything, my hopes and dreams. I feel like im losing all the ones I love. I feel like im losing myself…

In the name of Allah, the most gracious, the most merciful
Ya Allah, I pray to you to give me the strength and the determination for me to do what is needed of me. Make me a better muslim, make me a better son. Help me through this tough phase and show me the splendor and beauty that you have given upon us. Amin.

Wenger is ushering in a new age at Arsenal

Wenger said at the end of last season that “we analyse every position in the team to see how we can improve”. Note the word “we”. Selling Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Touré are big decisions and there seems to have been some strategic consultation within Arsenal.

I am sad to see Touré go and there is the potential exit of Emmanuel Eboue (a useful squad player) but I am fully supportive of the overall sale strategy that has taken place this season. I don’t care if they go to rivals.

My reason, and I suspect this is also part of Arsenal’s overall reasoning, is that Arsenal need to change the mentality of their squad. Many a time last season, after Arsenal conceded a goal or faced a struggle, the team could not find the resources to pick itself up mentally. Certain players thought themselves junior and waited for reaction from the older (or more established) players.

Clearing out those players who had established themselves at the top of the pecking order or had been at Arsenal for so long that they gained respect just due to their time at the club is a good way to start a new mentality at the club. We got rid of Adebayor’s attitude and influence. We got rid of Kolo’s seeming acceptance of graceful disappointment (he is a humble gentleman) and Eboue’s lack of continuous improvement.

Losing Kolo is not losing experience in the same way as it would be to lose William Gallas. Kolo has always played more with his heart than his head but I loved him. Johan Djourou needs to learn from Gallas not Kolo. Losing Eboue shows that sheer seniority will not save you if you don’t have the drive for continuous improvement and quality. It will be a good message to Song, Denilson and Diaby. Song has improved A LOT and Diaby very little. Losing Adebayor is a clear message that Arsenal will not stand for bad attitude especially when it doesn’t deliver consistently. It is a clear message to Nicklas Bendtner that the manager wants him to step up and to Eduardo and Robin van Persie too.

This summer we have what we did not have at the start of last season. We have Eduardo, Andrey Arshavin, Thomas Vermaelen (who plays with his head), Bendtner, potentially Tomas Rosicky and an improved Alex Song. Yes I would have liked to have a more experienced DM but maybe there are other ways to play that makes that less of a problem especially given the options we have in attack. Don’t forget Theo Walcott and Carlos Vela are very capable in various combinations. Arsenal have never had so many options in attack.

This summer we have also gotten rid of old attitudes and replaced them with new ones. The Gallas – Vemaelen partnership is going to be a brainy one. The balance of power in attack has changed, Bendtner and Eduardo will get more from Arshavin and Arshavin is starting his first full season with them together building a new partnership. FRancesc Fabregas will also change as a result of that. He will stay further back a little more and that helps Song.

I am overall more positive than many fans even if we don’t buy any more players. I would like one more defender since I am not so hot on Mikael Silvestre but I am happy with attack and somewhat happy with midfield.

Bendtner in my view is the most underrated young striker in world football. I think he is very, very good for his age and shows every sign of great potential. Many people who claim Bendtner is rubbish cannot tell me a striker of his age that scores the numbers and range of goals he scored last season. Bendtner works better with mobile partners like Vela and Eduardo than van Persie and Adebayor.

Eduardo moves in the box as good as any great striker and finishes as good as the best. He hasn’t got the height or the power or the speed but that should only be a difference of about 5 goals per season between him and the very best. If Arsenal learn how to play with Bendtner, Eduardo and Arshavin, we will not notice deficiencies in central midfield and we will be in for a good season.

I am not a betting man. People bet on their conventional knowledge of the thing they bet on (like the fact that Manchester United is expected to beat Portsmouth); others bet using statistics that show trends (like the fact that certain teams don’t lose at home), etc. This year, I would like to bet on my instinct only. My instinct is that Bendtner and Eduardo will get more than 20 goals each. In my mind, van Persie is the third choice striker.

Emmanuel Adebayor leaves Arsenal at only 25, some distance from his prime. He didn’t inspire Arsenal, didn’t win any trophies and didn’t commit wholeheartedly to the club. So it is difficult to respectfully bid him farewell but I will try.

For a few months now, we have all expected Ade to leave. Because these months also included very difficult moments of a difficult season, his presence has been a cause for more frustration than appreciation, even when he scored. It must have been somewhat as difficult for him as it was for the fans. I cannot afford him as much sympathy as I do the fans because he was the only person who could have corrected the difficulty but did not seem to want to do so by showing commitment in the last part of the season like Flamini did when he knew he was going to leave. Flamini played for Arsenal till his last minute with total commitment.

Ade arrived at Arsenal in January 2006. He had a lousy first touch for a striker but since Henry was there, the team did not have to rely on him and the fans gave him time to grow. The season before last, that patience seemed to have paid off when he scored 30 goals. His touch had improved a little but his determination was significantly higher. That determination along with his physical presence was what got him those goals – no small thanks to Cesc’s long passing. As Wenger once put it “It is difficult for opposition defenders to keep him quiet for 90 mins”. The fans, his team mates and the boss were very pleased with his contribution and valued him highly.

In his first season, Henry was the boss – nobody was bigger than Henry. In the second season, Cesc was the new king. Then Ade fought himself to the top with an excellent goalscoring record and won African Player of the year along with other accolades from opponents. He crowned himself the new king and it all got to his head.

History was about to repeat itself. Ade was about to get too big for his boots just as he did at Monaco and does with the Togolese national team where he is forever disrupting and undermining the authority of his managers. He was so arrogant that he head-butted his own player when he came on as a sub and allegedly suggested he had come in because the striker on the pitch was crap. That arrogance was not as heavily punished by the boss as I would have liked. That player that Ade insulted scored only 2 goals less than Ade last season and I hope will one day beat all Ade’s goal scoring and trophy records at Arsenal.

Ade used the summer of 2008 to further annoy fans and management about leaving, precisely at the time when the fans were anxious about the exit of Flamini and Hleb. He got a big contract in 2008 and then lost all motivation and fight and forgot he was sportsman that was required to work hard for his pay.

Ade has scored two wonderful goals that I remember and has played two great games. But in an Arsenal career of just three years, the negative influence, countless annoying offsides, no-shows, donkey misses and total lack of commitment unfortunately remain far more memorable.

I welcome his exit but I regret it too. I regret the fact that he didn’t have the discipline to exploit an opportunity to achieve great potential at a great club like Arsenal for a great manager who believed in him. I regret his personality is still destructive even after being given the chance to work in a great atmosphere. I regret that we lost a player who is about 18 months from his prime and clearly showed evidence that the potential could be immense. I regret that he wasted somebody else chance at Arsenal and that his previous season caused the team to focus on exploiting his strengths this season instead of that of Bendtner’s or Vela’s and he wasted that focus on him by being so unmotivated that he was always standing offside. While it is good to remove a player who is not a good influence, it is always sad to let go of a player with potential due to his attitude.

Football is just a game. It doesn’t feel like that during the season when it feels like life itself depends on it. But during the summer, I can afford to stand back and realise that it is humans involved. As a result, the most human thing to do is to wish Ade the best. He will not do to Hughes what he did to Wenger – at least not immediately – so I expect he will be successful in his first year at Manchester City.

Manchester City are owned by billionaires and it is clear that that is the life Ade wants. He is a bling bling guy who wants to date Beyonce and talk to football moguls on his mobile phone. He will want to get pally with the billionaires and go to Brazil and Madrid to party with Robinho so he can get introduced to Kaka or Ronaldinho. If Ade was a girl, he would be a tacky football WAG desperate to score with any player. He earns bigger now so he can do more and that could be the curse of him. I really hope it isn’t and I hope he doesn’t habour any plans to run for president in Togo sometime soon. I wouldn’t put it past him.

Good luck Ade. Keep your head down. You represent a lot of people from Togo and they are proud of you up to now. You are their biggest export after Cotton. Don’t let them down. You also represent yourself and football. Don’t screw it.

SuperBowl with Mokuncici (African-Korea)

I’ve been playing bowling for about 2 years now. but still, aku takleh nak consistently cari the right angle nak hit the “pocket” pins. aku memang tak reti LANGSUNG nak spin bola bowling tu. kalau under pressure orang ramai orang di sekeliling, mesti bola masuk longkang lebih byk dari hit the pins. crumble under pressure. jarang sangat aku boleh decent score, i mean over 100 jatuhan pins. kalau dgn Zame je aku ok sikit because he keeps telling me the right way, the right position and the right angle untuk baling bola bowling tu. he is so consistent and persistent dalam bowling-bowling ni. maklumlah Pasukan Archery UTM, mestilah gempak beb.

but amazingly, drove forward by anger boiling in me, i managed to do triple X. i mean XXX, yeah 3 kali strikes in a row! damn!

but you know, kalau kat sini, ramai orang jadi spectators. aku dah strikes 3 kali, aku turn je kat belakang, adalah 4-5 orang dok tgk score aku. aku terus jadi nervous tak tentu pasal. terus je PERASAN world class player. terus terketar-ketar. rasa dingin peluh aku kena angin air-cond. terus je missed spare.

dan-dan je orang-orang tu semua blah, aku dapat pulak spare. damn memang aku kaki perasan.

lepas je spare, aku dapat strike lagi. OMG must be my lucky day. aku paksa Mokuncici keeps on taking screen-shoots. takut-takut blackout ke, ape ke, takleh la nak bragging yang aku byk kali strikes. ni je peluang untuk aku buktikan kepada unbelievers. lol!

OMG! adakah aku akan brake into 200 pins barrier!! damn double XX.

oh, untuk melengkapkan hari yang bersejarah ni, aku berjalan dgn Mokuncici nak cross jalan raya yang sgt sibuk. ada seorang makcik dgn anak-anak dia nak follow kitaorang melintas jalan sbb dia takut kereta laju-laju time tu. lepas je crossed jalan, anak dia cakap :

“akak ni comel lah, comel sgt. macam bidadari”

damn!

tak sempat pulak nak record apa budak tu ckp. so takde buktilah. so cerita ni tak valid sbb takde validation. haha.

wei, saper nak lawan aku main bowling, ckp je kat mana!!
