The Diploma in Industrial Chemistry, popularly known by its acronym DIC, was formerly known as Diploma in Laboratory Technology (DLT) which was first established in 1968 in ITM Shah Alam.The main objective of the 3-year course then was nothing more than to train Bumiputera technocrats to work in the laboratory. However, in response to feedback from the local processing and chemical industries, the course curriculum was later revised in 1971 to incorporate more engineering subjects. This revamp ensured that DIC students turn into multi-skilled graduates with acquired self-confident, disciplined and knowledgeable who are not only skillful in the laboratory but also capable in the chemical plant. The DLT course was consequently renamed DIC which aptly reflect its industry-based content. As DIC is a dynamic course, the course syllabus was again revised in 1997 and its duration shortened to 3 years from previously 4 years. This recent change was deemed necessary in order to ensure ITM is on the competitive edge as more and more private colleges offering similar diploma courses mushroomed very rapidly in Malaysia. The year 1990 onward saw an incredible growth of investment from multi-national in the chemical industries particularly in the sectors of petrochemicals, polymers, upstream and downstream of petroleum and gas, specialty chemicals and oleochemicals. It was due to this phenomenal expansion in the chemical industries that eventually gave birth to DIC in the ITM northernmost branch campus. In mid 1997, DIC had been officially set up in ITM Perlis with a hopeful vision to provide adequate training to enable more bumiputera fill the vacuum of semi-skilled and skilled positions in these sprouting chemical industries.

Saya adalah pelajar DIC ITM batch 81 – 85, boleh bayangkan berapa umor saya sekarang? Tak sangka ada satu laman sebut pasal DIC. Bila sebut DIC teringat zaman muda & gila – giler dulu! Banyak kenangan.. Adik2 ketahuilah, ramai antara batch saya sudah berjaya – kerja di Petronas, MPOB ( Malaysian Palm Oil Board) dll.
Yang paling berjaya adalah Professor Datuk Dr Rosli Yunus – Timbalan Naib Canselor UMP , Gambang.
Kalau nak tips , petua atau apa2 boleh lah tanya saya , tapi bukan update sangat maklumlah dah 26 tahun tinggalkan kolej. Salah seorang pensyarah saya yg masih ada ialah Prof Madya Dr Rosli Sulaiman.

Nampaknya awak pun ex stuent DIC -baru 6 tahun keluar, tapi sudah pun senior! Alhamdulillah dapat kerja di Petronas. ,Memang idaman zaman kami dulu nak kerja di Petronas, tapi biasalah tak semua dapat kerja di situ. Saya pernah dapat interview Petronas Research di Tganu ( tak ingat nama tempat tu) tapi ditola kerana masa interview terlepas cakap tak mahu transfer ke Sarawak! Memang lumrah warga Petronas selalu berpindah randah. Kalau awak bawah Cari gali munkin pernah dengar nama Khirul Anwar – dia Gen Mgr ( tak pasti ) di head office KLCC.Dia batch saya.
Saya ingin bertanya adakah awak dari Industrial Chm atau Chem Engineering? Adakah kedua2 kursus ini masih ada atau telah digabungkan jadi Chem Eng? Adakah awak sudah lanjutkan pelajaran ke peringkat Ijazah – bawah biasiswa Petronas?
Sejak Uni Petronas ditubuhkan di Bandar Seri Iskandar, saya dapat tahu Petronas banyak menumpukan pengambilan staff mereka dari Uni itu? Benarkah demikian?
Apapun saya ucapkan tahniah kerana berada dalam Oil & Gas Industry.Kerana hanya industry ini sahaja yg boleh menjanjikan gaji dan imbuhan yg lebih besar berbanding dgn industri lain.Tapi saingan sekarang sudah pasti terlalu besar.. dgn persaingan dari graduan IPTA dan IPTS lain. Sekian dimaklumkan

Belum saya belum lagi senior. On my course, still on learning curve and yeah, hell yeah! this is my DREAM JOB. Memang dari dulu nak serve the nation, and kerja untuk GLC ni sedikit sebanyak membantu pertumbuhan negara, wpun ada tirisnya. ketepikan dulu hal2 sedemikian.
Memang culture PETRONAS berpindah randah, saya akui. Untuk kerja dgn O&G ni kena byk travel, itu mesti. saya yakin jika anda sanggup, pasti ada jalannya. Setahu saya Carigali PMO tak ada orang bernama Khairul Anwar, GM or SM.
Saya dulu Diploma in Industrial Chemistry Arau, Dip. Melanjutkan pelajaran kat UTP, Chemical Engineering major in Gas & Petroleum under full scholarship. PETRONAS tanggung. Yeah, UTP mmg menjadi feeder utama kepada PETRONAS.
FYI, PETRONAS not the highest paid company, byk lagi service company yang tinggi dan lumayan bayarannya. Tapi setiap $ comes with extra effort. so worth it lah. PETRONAS ni balance between life and $, terpulang pada pandangan masing2.
Syukur, rezeki saya masih lagi dengan PETRONAS dan saya mungkin akan menamatkan karier saya bersama PETRONAS. InsyaAllah.

Bagus – bagus, tahniah saya ucapkan .U r on the right path. Memang betul bukan Petronas is the highest paid.But if Petronas start to retrench staff, u can start embarking on other overseas based O & G. Mcm MAS punya pilot lah – they are well paid for young guy compre to other indstries tapi other Airlines can offer better too with experience – Emirate can offer salary per annum $1 million. Saya dengar staff yg kene retrench kat Gebeng pun cabut ke Middle East with salary in US$!Dapat VSS lagi..But of course, better pay comes with hard work – lagi tinggi perks lagi teruk diorang perah awak!
How about your other peers? Berapa orang grad your batch – dan berapa yg dapat jobs at the right industry and right quaification?
I will contact Khairul Anwar just to know where he is – dah lama tak kontek. Incase you go to Labuan – you may come across Jamil Hashim ( Senior Manager, DIC 79 – 83), aWALUDDIN HARUN ( my batch), Saifuddin ( Melaka , DIC 83- 87), ad afew more. Kalau boleh buat lah satu club DIC grads ke?
If you want to tie up with Petrons that is good though kita tak nampak nasib akan datang, Kerja makan gaji memang banyak cabaran – jadi Pak Turut, do things that you dont like, get pushed around, work with people that you cant get along with, back stabbers, ass lickers..you boleh sambung Master in Chem Eng . atau ke phd jadi researcher in technical . atau take MBA ( AS WHAT I am doing now) to clmb up the corporate ladders.Kalau duduk teknikal line ni tak kemana sangatlah, you still handle the operation but takeorders from BOD yg bukan lineChm Engineer pun..Tapi kalau nak jadi CEO ,well another option..apa pun terpulang pada awak.. but you are still young..masa muda ni lah grab all the opportnities!Or you may want to become Consultant like me ..who knows .. you may be the expert people sought your advce..
So DIC dah tukar ke ARAU .. many changes havebeen in Uitm ( then ITM).Dont worry about tiris in GLC, Singapore has Temasik..pun rugi berbilliondollar Sing, apasal puak 2 ni tak bising? Siapa lagi nak tolong melayu kalau bangsa sendiri tak nak tolong. In mywork now that has taken me around Malaysia, I know who is controlling the country economically, who is the Prime Minister in open market.. siapa yg tak pernah cukup tapi asyk mintak itu dan ini..BANGSA apa yg kiasu dan menipu dalam niaga. Banyak aduan kenapa melayu je dapat operate stesen minyak Petronas, yet 40years ago ( and below) bangsa apa yg operate the gas station dan bangsa apa yg jadi kuli isi minyak? We can’t be in the same league like the Banglas forever…
